Hey guys,

I have a question to ask, I have an Hp/Compaq nx7010 with 512 RAM and 1.5 Ghz Pentium M processor. I want to sell it so i can buy a new laptop. It is in perfect condition. What price should i reasonably expect to receive?

Thanks!

I haven't really looked into that in a while, but I can't imagine that you could get too much today, possibly around $300 USD.  That's mostly a guess based on passed experience, so please treat it as such.  You can try taking a look on eBay for similar models, but they have become pretty scarce lately.

I've been looking on eBay for a while and just got a used 1.4 GHz X1020 for $299 + shipping, so that $300 estimate is pretty close to reality.

It was a little more then I wanted to spend, but it had the 64MB video and a 1680x1050 screen.  Entire machines are a bit scarce because most of the sellers dismantle them and sell off the parts, which can net them more money.

My purchase had a few surprises.  It turned out to have an excellent 1920x1200 screen which was a VERY NICE surprise since they go for about $150 - $200 by themselves.  It also overheated and crashed, but that turned out to be a disconnected fan.  Someone must have forgot to reconnect it after cleaning.  I already upgraded the wireless to a "genuine" HP 2200G card so there's no BIOS lockout.  I have a Dothan 1.8 on it's way for a CPU upgrade.  I put in 2 GB of RAM.  I needed the RAM for VMware.

Why this older technology machine?  First, these machines just feel good as readers of this forum have known for years.

Second, I wanted to leave it at work and have it running VMware Server under WinXP. It's so old I don't worry too much about it and I don't bother carrying it back-n-forth from home-to-work.

Using VMware, I've installed RedHat Linux and and have various databases like Oracle 10g2 and MySQL to experiment with database recovery and data conversion.  That way,  I don't mess up my company notebook, which I do have to carry back-n-forth.

Linux/database reinstalls are easy with VMware.  I'm even seeing the full 1920x1200 resolution in my Linux windows.

I also have a new HP dv9543t that I got at at Costco with a coupon on Monday.   It's got Vista Home Premiium.   I'm not too impressed with all the HP "bloatware", but the machine feels pretty good.  These may be the new X1000's in the years to come.

Cheers,
