No boot... motherboard or videocard??

When I hit the power button, the LEDs come on and the CD drive lights up momentarily, but there is nothing on the screen. No BIOS no nothing. No hard drive activity. I've tried pressing down on the video card and wiggling it, but nothing happens. The LCD flashes quickly (no image, just backlight) when I power it off so I'm guessing it's not a dead screen. Can anyone tell me if this is a bad motherboard or video card or CMOS battery? Any help greatly appreciated!

It's really hard to tell from that description, but it really could be either.  I would first blame the graphics card because of the notorious nature of it, but it's really hard to say what it could be.  Unless you want to risk buying a graphics card for about $100, I would say that you should probably think about retiring the laptop since a motherboard runs about $300 and getting them from eBay is not a good idea since most of them are broken anyway.  Maybe someone else has a suggestion since I know that other members have suggested that they can fix the graphics cards, but that's all I have for you.

hmmm... do u know if the computer will boot w/o video card? if it does, then it's gotta be the motherboard... hopefully i can borrow my buddy's x1000 and swap video cards with him and see whats wrong :P

I don't believe that it will boot without a working video card, at least from what I've read.  Luckily in the over two years I've had it, my laptop hasn't had any problems.

you had better not to involve your buddy into this trouble, coz the heat-sinking of this type laptop is intricate, now I get into troulbe, either the new video card or the CPU is over-heated.
