Does anyone know how to turn off the laptop monitor in a dual-monitor situation, short of closing the lid (or holding the lid-closed button)?

I believe that if you cycle through the screen configs using Fn+F4, you will find one of them that just uses the external display as the main display and turns off the internal one.  Also, if you use the ATI control panel, there is an option to disable the internal display.  I believe that with the other monitor connected and enabled, you can go to the Displays tab of the ATI Control Panel and just click the Red On/Off button on the corner of the LCD section.  Let me know if this wasn't clear enough and I will try to help you.

That's cool, that's another good way to do it, without the 3rd party software I'm using now. The thing is that I just want to turn the screen off, like a power button, not disable it (because disabling it dumps everything on it onto the primary screen). I found that even closing and reopening the lid will reenable the laptop screen, oddly.

Maybe I'll ask compaq and ati, they might know.

Ok, I didn't realize that that's what you were looking for.  I'm not sure that that sort of thing is possible.  I tried looking around a little bit and came up dry, so if you find something useful please let us know.
