Anyone have their machine just die all of the sudden? Mine did, plugging in power supply won't even light up LED's COMPAQ says it sounds like dead motherboard and will fix for $300 - anyone else know of this issue?

I have heard of that problem before and I think compaq actually may have diagnosed it right.  Even so, do you have any way to test whether the power supply may be at fault?  If you had a dead power supply and hadn't realized it, the battery could have gone dead on you.  If it truely is the motherboard, you will have to decide if $300 is worth it for your machine.  You didn't post specs, but I would go online and see if you can find another machine at a reasonable price.  That part is strictly up to you though.

P.S.  You will need to register to post a reply.  Your post alerted me to my incorrect forum permissions.  Thanks for the heads up.

It wasn't the power supply, I have three of them and tried it with all three, the battery was half charged when everything went black. Plugging in the power supply flickers the led for a second and then they are dark. Support had me hold the power button down for two minutes and retry, replace the CMOS battery and retty all to no avail. From what I have read on the net it is either a motherboard failure or a shorting/fried video card.

I really loved this notebook and had no problems for almost two years until now - now I am pretty upset that I have to shell out $300 for a fix. Has anyone done this, and what kind of warranty do they give on the fix?

Thanks,

It sounds to me like their diagnosis was right.  That sort of catastrophic failure would suggest the motherboard.  Basically, you are back to the same old issue:  decide between repair and getting a new laptop.  There's not all that much that can be done at this point besides those two things.  Good luck with your laptop and I know what you mean, I love it too!
