Quote from: salvo on April 21, 2010, 08:15:30 AMIn spite of some divergent information, this processor exists only in the single type of socket which is 478.

The only reason for "divergent information" is that people don't bother to do even basic research.

Socket 478 = Pentium 4 socket
Socket 479 = Pentium M socket

The two sockets are NOT compatible.

What might be confusing is that even though the 479 socket has 479 holes, a Pentium-M still only has 478 pins.  The processor is mechanically compatible with the 478 Pentium-4 socket but it is NOT electrically compatible.

The bottom line is that referring to a Pentium-M as socket 478 is incorrect terminology and misleading at best.

I've had my X1000 since the summer of 2003 and it has been going strong for the most part.  I've since upgraded the CPU, the RAM twice, the hard drive, and the wireless card.

On my last upgrade though, I switched the 802.11b card for a 802.11g card (HP card on the whitelist) and also upgraded from 1.5gb ram to 2gb ram.  One of those two upgrades (did them at the same time) caused some sort of corruption however as I get an error when loading windows that a service can't start, and the error still occurs even when I remove both of the new pieces of hardware.  Hopefully it's just a corrupted file and an OS re-install will fix it.

But overall this laptop has had amazing longevity.  I would agree that it's weakest point is the dx8.1 graphics, and thus no vista or windows 7 driver whatsoever.  I've been able to get the XP driver installed in Vista and 7 but it doesn't work with any 3d acceleration.  The screen however is still absolutely fantastic and IMO still looks better than a lot of the laptop screens I see these days.

The sturdy feel is still there as well.  When I was looking at which laptop to buy my test was to try to lift the entire laptop up (with the screen open) from one of the very front corners.  If it felt sturdy then great, but if it felt like it was about to snap apart under it's own weight then pass...

Technical Issues / Severe lag in games, overheati...

I play World of Warcraft and I've been successful in getting it to run on my laptop in the past.  I used to raid karazhan on my laptop all the time.

I know the system requirements of the game have increased since then but I'm not sure if that alone can explain the problems I'm having.

Running around the world is usually okay, my problem occurs when I'm in a 5-man dungeon.  The game will be running slow but playable and then all of a sudden everything on the screen will freeze and stay that way for maybe 10 seconds before resuming.

Since I play a healer this generally causes everyone in the instance to die when this happens so it's extremely annoying.

I did upgrade my laptop from a 1.4 banias to a 1.7 dothan, I'm wondering if what I'm experiencing is simply overheating?  If the CPU is getting hot enough to start throttling that would seem to explain the issue I'm having, though not sure what the solution would be at that point.  I've used one of those ~$10 laptop cooling pads in the past but I'm not sure how much good those really do.

I confirm that Dothan M755 in 2Ghz is adequate to updater Banias 1.4Ghz.
It works perfectly on my portable.

In spite of some divergent information, this processor exists only in the single type of socket which is 478.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have a pavilion zt3312ea,
last week i noticed that the fan made noises like a plane and i looked for a guide to clean this.

i found the maintenance and service guide from hp and started.

to follow the guide wasnt a problem, and i saw some dust at the display and started to clean it too.

then, i wanted to assemble the notebook, and was shocked: the fan wasnt next to the case, the fan was 2-3 cm next to it!
the complete case seemed to be too big!

anyway, i read the guide and built it. the result: the gaps which were 1 mm before - now they are 5!
i cant put the power cable completely inside because the slot is 1 cm more inside...

i started the notebook - all components working, anything semms to be ok.

my question: does anybody knows what i did wrong?
and does anybody knows how i can repair this`?

thanky you!

sorry for my bad english, i'm german...

Hi there,

I still have this machine which i simply love.

It works but had to replace the HDD recently after it died due to years of torrent , emule abuse.

The system is reporting certain problems though

1) Power on off button is getting hard every day
2) Optical drive doesn't recognize CD. DVD's still work though !!
3) touch pad buttons are also a little harder now.
4) battery is barely enough to survive 15 mins.
5) I can also sense the screen light is dim compared to my initial years.

Thats it !!! :-))

Socket 478 is the Pentium-4 socket.  All Laptop Pentium-M chips are 479 I believe.

2Ghz Dothan would probably work since it is 400mhz fsb but you would be pushing the limits of the cooling solution on the laptop at that point.  I went from a 1.4 Banias to a 1.7 Dothan myself.

Has anyone been able to get games to work under Windows 7?

There are a number of games that I am still able to play on my X1000 and I do so occasionally when I'm away from home.  World of Warcraft, Counter-Strike: Source, and even Battlefield 2 all work using minimum settings and other older games like Counter-Strike 1.6, Battlefield 1942, Total Annihilation, Day of Defeat, etc run great.

But they only work in XP.  I am able to install Windows 7 and force the older XP drivers to install (tried ancient drivers from HP site as well as 5.6 omegas) and while windows works, no games work at all.

Hello,

I want to replace the processor 1.4GHZ Banias with a Dothan 2.0GHZ on my compaq X1050CA but I need an elucidation:

DOTHAN SL7EM seems to me appropriate, but must he be a socket 478 or 479 or two are compatible?

Thanks!

Has anyone had an X1000 that has never had any issues?

I got my X1000 in July of 2003 and it is working as my edonkey/emule/torrent workhorse + firewall machine ever since in 24x7 non-stop mode, sitting inside a TV stand... outlived 2 HDDs in the process... running Windows 7 now, even it is Pentium M 1.3Ghz... I just upped it to 2Gb RAM that's it.
