Technical Issues / USB2?
Last post by ihrytsak - September 07, 2008, 10:05:13 AM
Hi:

Can anyone confirm that the X1000 with intel 82801DB/DBM USB controllers will run as a USB 2 controller?

The specs for this machine indicate it is USB2 capable but whenever I plug in a USB 2 device I get a pop up saying that "This device can perform faster if you connect it to a USB 2.0 port. For a list of available ports click here.  When I do that it says that there are no USB 2 ports available.

I have installed the latest USB drivers for each of the 3 controllers which are version 5.1.2600.5512 dated 7/1/2001. Am I missing something?

Upgrades and Accessories / Re: Just upgraded to Dothan

Make sure you install the heatsink correctly, and clean off all the old heat sink compound really good.  Make sure you add new heat sink compound and not too much! Just a dot is enough. I have been running a 2ghz Dothan in mine for over a year with no problems!

Yeah thanks for this forum, I was able to upgrade my 1.3GHz Banias (stock) to a 1.6 GHz Dothan. But my x1000 gets kinda hot. ~53 degC when idle.. and reaches 70-75 degC during cpu intensive applications are running even though I already cleaned the fan (it was really dusty... a wall of dust already accumulated) and the heat sink.

Technical Issues / Battery Not Charging
Last post by gutchak - August 31, 2008, 01:37:36 AM
Given that this unit's about five years old, its understandable that its battery no longer holds a charge. My question is if its safe to keep it in the unit while its on or not.

Its like, once i turn the unit on, it indicates that its charging the battery... then a few seconds after, the charging led just turns off by itself.

Is this normal? Expected of a dying battery?

Technical Issues / Re: LCD Backlight Problem
Last post by gutchak - August 31, 2008, 01:35:54 AM
Well, i managed to ask a tech to reheat the unit's fl inverter. It has greatly improved the problem. I'm actually using this unit as of writing... I guess its safe to say that it was the inverter causing the backlight to go off and on or whatever. Its not working perfectly... at times it does go off, but tapping on the switch actually resolves the off to turning on.

I've ordered for a replacement inverter already. Hopefully, it'll fully resolve this situation.

Technical Issues / Problem with boot (hard drive?...
Last post by amitabh - August 26, 2008, 05:57:21 PM
Im a newbie to register with this site,  but its been saving me for the last couple years now.

Im having a problem when turning on my computer. When I boot it goes to the COMPAQ homescreen (where you have the option to press F10 for setup) and then the boot process stops. It basically turns on then stops when the compaq screen is loaded, never even attempts to continue into XP.

Keyboard is responsive to me pressing F10, but it never goes into the setup screen. Video seems to be working okay as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Upgrades and Accessories / 802.11 SuperG 108 MiniPci
Last post by dragone - August 26, 2008, 02:48:40 PM
Hello,
I have a router D-Link DI-624+ whit "SuperG" feature, up to 108 Mb. So, I would like to upgrade my X1016EA from a Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B to one of available 108Mb MiniPci.
Has someone installed a kind of this adapter? If not, what are good 54Mb adapters?
Thank you in advance,
Raffaele

After reading the Video Card issue thread I am 95% confident that it is my video card.  After attemping the 67Y technique (and letting my computer sit unaccosted for 24 hours) it now functions.  I haven't grabbed it and shaken it to near death, but I am running a video stress test to see if its overheating, or the card was just slightly unseated.

I intend to take the video card out and re-seat it with the suggested fixes, from the "keyboard off" view I can't tell if the video card is warpped, I'm hoping its not and maybe it just got slightly unseated yesterday when I took it on a trip.  The plastic portions of my case are really starting to degrade...super glue will be needed I think

I fully intend to try to keep this notebook up for a couple more years.  Though its lost most of its portable functionality, it is still a capable platform.  I'm looking at buying the Dell M1330 for my next PC, I really need the portability of a netbook with DVD capability...and battery life...seems like a lot of the PCs they are coming out with lately barely last 2 hours on DVD playback...
