Hmonitor 4.4.3.1 shows CPU temperature, as well as hard drive temp.  Can someone please try out this software and post at what CPU temp their fan turns on?  Also, is there a way to adjust the temp when the fan turns on?  This s/w does not provide that funtionality.

I just had my power socket and headphone jack replaced (~ $200) but now my fan does not turn on.  It is running a lot cooler since the socket doesn't overheat anymore - it was loose and was causing battery charging issues.   I didn't know of this s/w before the repair, but after the repair I have seen the CPU temp rise to 78 C and still no fan.  The bottom of the PC is still not very hot....I'm just being paranoid!  IIRC when the PC was new the fan hardly ever came on either, but that was a LONG time ago and my memory isn't what it used to be!

Update: the tech forgot to plug the fan harness into the motherboard.  All OK now :-)

Upgrades and Accessories / Which CPU
Last post by Sirius - October 20, 2008, 05:28:32 AM
Hi mates,

I would like to upgrade the CPU in my X1015US to a 1.7GHz Dothan.
There are two CPUs I've found on ebay:
SL7EP and SL8BA (both FSB 400MHz)

Do you know which of them is the right one?

Thank you & Regards

Technical Issues / Re: Battery Not Charging
Last post by imfletcher - October 15, 2008, 12:11:35 PM
I've have had this problem twice, each about a year apart.  Yes, a new battery solved the problem each time.

However, it has happened again recently.  A "new" battery this time did not solve the problem.  There is no way to tell if the battery I bought is indeed new, so I can't be 100% its not still a battery issue.  I plan to exchange the battery for another and see what happens.

FYI while the battery is in, the charger plug gets VERY hot.  If I wiggle the plug, sometimes the orange charging light will come on for a short time.  Then it flickers while making a high pitched noise.   I have 2 different power adaptors, 1 with a slightly longer plug than the other.  The longer tip plug is easier to get a charge started now.  I suspect a damaged internal plug.

You can buy a battery on e-bay for about $50.  Search using the "Replace" code printed on the battery.

I have the same problem.  Over the weekend my laptop will no longer get into the BIOS, but still does recognize the F10 key and says it is entering setup.  Obviously, if you can't get into the BIOS you can't run the BIOS hard drive diagnostics utility.  I still need to try to remove my hard drive and run setup.

Replacing an LCD usually means replacing the companion inverter (usually attached under the LCD itself).
Reason is, the inverter supplies a particular voltage and amperage to the screen, not to mention the compatible wiring.

I upgraded today from a wxga to a wuxga..... you will need a new cable from the LCD to the video card and the wuxga LCD........  The xuxga cable has more connections to the LCD.

Thats it!

Sorry about the late reply, but I would try taking the hard drive out and putting it back in (take out the two screws and pull out the hard drive carrier, then just put the carrier back in and re-screw it).  If the hard drive isn't making a good connection, the boot process doesn't seem to work properly, sometimes it won't even attempt to boot at all.

Technical Issues / Re: USB2?

I've solved this. It's explained in this article by Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/connect/usb/usbfaq_intro.mspx

I just replaced my hard drive and it appears that in the reinstallation of Windows the "enhanced" USB controller did not get re-installed or re-enabled. I found the enhanced controller listed under "Other"  in Device manager and once I updated the driver for it, all USB ports became USB2.
