Just an update: I got the fglrx drivers working in Ubuntu 6.06 perfectly with the following modelines in the "Monitor" section:

The key difference seems to be the 121.50 which was what I was missing all along! yay.
HOWEVER, I've since switched back to the open source drivers for ati that comes with ubuntu out of the box as it feels snappier when playing bzFlag, and doing other opengl stuffs... *shrug*
