The key difference seems to be the 121.50 which was what I was missing all along!  yay.

HOWEVER, I've since switched back to the open source drivers for ati that comes with ubuntu out of the box as it feels snappier when playing bzFlag, and doing other opengl stuffs... *shrug*

The ones in the page didnt work with me, so i went to windows, instaled PowerStrip and i got the modelines for my screen.

Sweet!  The ones there didn't work for me either... I didn't know there was a utility that can grab the modelines!!  Unfortunately  I don't have windows installed...  Care to share the modelines you got so I can try it out?  (;

hm.. wonder if that utility runs in wine.. doubt it...   Edit:  Nope

Yeah, I tried the timings to no avail myself...

For me, linux does everything I need.. XP only brings additional headaches like virus/spyware scanners, constant updates, windows 'genuine' advantage crap, and much more..

Considering that I don't play games on my laptop, there's no need for windows.. hehe

If you have 1680x1050 resolution (or maybe any widescreen?), you're probably out of luck.. the more recent fglrx drivers don't work with mine.  An old version of the drivers worked for me very well, but requires an older version of the kernel as well.. so it's no longer usable.. ):

My laptop is an x1020us with ati 9200/9000 and 1680x1050 res.  If your video card is newer, it may work, so it's worth a try.

To install (very briefly):

Ubuntu 6.06:
1. Install xorg-driver-fglrx, fglrx-kernel-source, and fglrx-control packages
2. run "sudo aticonfig --initial"
3. run "sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv"

more info: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Dapper_Installation_Guide

Gentoo (this is from memory):
1. "emerge ati-drivers ati-drivers-extra"
2. use fglrxconfig to update your xorg.conf
3. run "eselect opengl ati" to enable hardware acceleration

If you don't intend on playing games (who does on linux?), then I find the open source drivers work very well and provide good hardware acceleration.

Yup.  I have it installed (tried both ubuntu and kubuntu) - they even can run on my USB drive.

I moved from a Gentoo system, which was actually running quite nicely.  I am only switching cuz installations/upgrades are now lightning fast!  Unfortunately, with (k)ubuntu, I now have to re-learn some of the configuration options and new locations of stuff.  Gentoo had very nice configuration utilities (command line, but good), which are now gone and I have to do things manually.. ugh.

The only thing that hasn't worked for me for a long time is the ati proprietary drivers (fglrx)..  I believe this is because the ATI drivers crap out with the 1680x1050 display and the 9200/9000 video card (i hear the latest windows drivers do the same).  However, the default open source drivers work great, and have full hardware acceleration.   Just doesn't have all the features needed for things like using playing windows games with cedega ):
