Software / Re: can I play Call of Duty 4?
« on: July 17, 2008, 11:49:34 AM »
No, no you cannot.  I'm not sure what the X1418's processor is, but I don't think it's 2.4GHz.  On a side note...how are the Omega Drivers working for you.  I used to have a good ATI driver that could run Steam/Half-life games...but ATI stopped supporting the old mobile GPU's and the HP driver is TOO old.  I tried installing the Omega once but I think I botched it.....

Upgrades and Accessories / Internal USB/BT
« on: April 15, 2008, 10:52:56 AM »
Ok, sorry I don't have pix and I know this forum is loosing interest w/ the age of these laptops, but I did find something interesting.  The bluetooth module used internally is essentially a USB device.  The first 4 pins of the cable that comes with it are +3.3v, Gnd, D+, D- (if memory serves it's D+, D- and not the other way around...check online for acer bluetooth mod).  Some USB bluetooth sticks can use 3.3v instead of USB spec 5v.  I recently hacked the end off of a USB bluetooth module and built a cable inside my laptop and it WORKS!  Module turns on and off w/ the wifi button on the front.  If you could find a 5v supply somewhere you could potentially have an internal USB port if you didn't want to mess with bluetooth.  The module I built was heat-shrunk and still fit where the OEM module would go.  I used a cable I got online that fit the motherboard and then 4-wire phone cord to attach the module.  USE THIN CORD as there's not a ton of room to run the cable, mine barely fit!

Technical Issues / Re: Blinking led in optical drive
« on: March 03, 2008, 04:37:51 PM »
Think I just figured it out.  Mine has been blinking for ages.  It seemed to have trouble reading disks from time to time, but not too bad. (watched a DVD w/o troubles a couple months ago)  A couple weeks ago it started making a loud humming noise and it caused the system to "stick" at the bios screen for prolonged times.  I decided to replace the drive with a DVD burner (if you need suggestions on where to get replacement parts, Message me...I had good luck with prices).  No more blinking lights and great read times.

Linux / Re: Running Linux on x1000/nx7000/zt3000

Good luck with XGL on this.  After MONTHS of playing with drivers and copying and editing files in the old and new ATI binary drivers I managed to compile some hackjob that worked on my X1050US in 6.10.  I'll probably never be able to duplicate the effort. ATI + LINUX SUX

Looks like ciper got one working.

@Ciper: was this on an x1000?

Yeah, I'd still like to see instructions on the 2915ABG.  I haven't upgraded yet, because I figure if I can't upgrade to the nicer card, I wasn't going to just yet...

Does anyone know if there's a good way to activate the external VGA port?  I'd like to hook up to my plasma tv when I work from home :)
