Drivers / Re: F.34 BIOS installation file
January 13, 2009, 12:34:59 AM
Sorry for the scattered thoughts, but I do recall that there are issues solved by later versions (but probably not enough if you want a third-party wi-fi card).  What card does it have in it now, the Intel 2100 B-wireless?

Searched Google, it lead me to this site:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=0&prodSeriesId=332798&prodNameId=332800&swItem=hb-20316-1&swEnvOid=181&swLang=8&taskId=135&mode=3

The file you are looking for is "sp27857.exe."

P.S.  Glad to hear that the site is still useful to people!

Technical Issues / Re: Problem with boot (hard drive?)
October 03, 2008, 10:54:23 AM
Sorry about the late reply, but I would try taking the hard drive out and putting it back in (take out the two screws and pull out the hard drive carrier, then just put the carrier back in and re-screw it).  If the hard drive isn't making a good connection, the boot process doesn't seem to work properly, sometimes it won't even attempt to boot at all.

That definitely could be the problem.  My guess is that it has to do with the Master or Slave setting of the drive (given that the drive is IDE, I do believe there is still a master/slave setting), but bigger problem is how to change it since most drives don't have jumpers, might need to flash the firmware of the dvd-rw drive to make it work.  But, like I said, this is just speculation on my part.

Technical Issues / Re: LCD Backlight Problem
August 13, 2008, 01:39:27 PM
My best guess is that the backlight itself is dying, it probably needs a bulb replacement.  That said, I've never replaced the bulb so I'm not sure where to acquire one.  Other possible culprits would be the inverter or a loose connection.

Software / Re: can I play Call of Duty 4?
July 23, 2008, 10:08:42 PM
I still use the catalyst 5.6 driver with the Driver Modder with my old X1000, it seems to be that last driver that even works.

EDIT:  Oh right, and to answer the original question, I highly doubt that CoD4 would even be playable.

I seriously doubt that it would work, the biggest downfall being the ATI Radeon 9000 card.  Even with 64MB, that had a hard time playing even 720p content.  That said, even my current thinkpad still has a problem playing HD content at times.  Maybe someone else can weigh in on this.

Upgrades and Accessories / Re: Max size HD Upgrade?

Yes, it has to be ATA-6 or IDE, SATA will not work.

The drive you listed there should work just fine, but just be warned that I haven't tried this myself and can't say for sure.

I can't see any reason why those drives wouldn't work, but I don't know of anyone who has used them.  When in doubt, buy from somewhere with a return policy I guess.

So it did require a new interface cable?

I believe the graphics card is fine, but I seem to remember something about a interface cable and possibly a different backlight inverter...  Sorry I can't be more help though.

You could disable the "Automatically restart" option under "System Preferences."

You can just right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties."  Then go to the "Advanced" tab and click the third "Settings" button in the "Startup and Recovery" section.  Just uncheck the "Automatically restart" option there and keep clicking "OK" until all of the windows are gone.

Check out the first image in "Getting Under the Hood"

The small door in the upper-right hand corner of the image is where the battery lives.

Nice job, it's good to see users still out there somewhere!  I haven't been very actively lately since I've been using my ThinkPad for over a year now and loving it.  My dad still uses the old zt3000 quite a bit though and it runs flawlessly!

Technical Issues / Re: Windows Vista on Presario X1000
December 21, 2007, 10:21:05 AM
It seems like some change in the ATI drivers conflicts with the LCD Display for that laptop.  That was evident even in XP if modded catalyst drivers newer than 5.6 were installed.  My guess is that you won't be able to find a driver old enough to run on Vista.  I won't say it's a lost cause, but it's probably pretty damn close.
