I'm considering upgrading my 1.4 Banias to a 2.0 Dothan. Is this possible? Also, I'm confused about compatibility. Is SL7EM considered doable for the X1000 series?

I have not upgraded my processor since it's a 1.6 and I'm still under warranty, but I believe any Dothan with a 400 MHz bus speed will work fine. I have not taken the laptop apart, but there are images of how to do it in the forum so you can check them out. I believe others here have done the same upgrade you suggest so maybe one of them will stop in and get back to you.
Thx KF Man. I was a 'regular' member years ago under the original domain name - but glad to see that you were able to preserve most of the valuable resources/how-tos. I received response from HP, and they indicated that the S7 is not compatible with the X1000 - but support is usually very conservative and not necessarily accurate.

Most likely they are being conservative, but sometimes processors have weird distinctions that make them incompatible. Judging from the state of tech support in general, I'm guessing that it would work fine and that the tech support person didn't really know what he/she was talking about. Like I said before, I would wait and see what others have to say. Great to see some people coming back these days, but traffic has definately slowed down.
Thanks. Yep, traffic is not the same as yesteryear but that's understandable. I've been shopping around and finally placed HP NC-series and Lenovo on my shortlist but decided the upgrade route because those machines aren't exactly cheap! Upgrading isn't cheap either but it is cheaper ;)
I am not so fond of the consumer LTs these days but that is mostly subjective since my requirements are very specific (ie. keyboard layout,+WSXGA resolution, etc) After playing around with a few new models at the local BestBuy/Staples, the X1000 feels right at home - perhaps the X1000/ZT3000 build quality spoiled me so those who own these machines shouldn't take them for granted.
Well, I ordered a 2.0GHz 400fsb dothan so I will report how things go sometime next week...
Ok, good luck with your upgrade. I know what you mean, I'm sad that I can't find a laptop that compares with my current one, especially the WSXGA+ screen that I love so much. I have recently been looking at smaller 14" models and 1280x800 would be acceptable for that, but not on a 15.4" notebook. It's really tough finding another laptop this good so I'll have to get going if I ever plan to get another. For now it's good enough, but I'm thinking smaller would be better since I carry my laptop everyday during school.

I may be doing 14" next time as well. One particular model that intrigued me was the Lenovo Z61t 14.1" with WXGA+ 1400x900. Now that LCD monitors are getting so cheap I'm leaning more towards portability and using a larger LCD monitor+port replicator for home base.
As an FYI, I did not order the 'SL7EM' designation which are prolific on eBay. Just a regular Intel 755 400FSB Cpu @ 2.0Ghz
I was looking at a few Lenovo's as well, I also just started looking at the HP nc6400, but it's a little bit expensive. It also can do a resolution of WXGA+ which is my new target in a 14" laptop. As for the processor, I bet that one will work just fine then.

after weeks dealing with various vendors and getting shipped incorrect parts and other delays, I finally got a 1.8 CPU and everything is working fine - great as a matter of fact. I'll be holding on to the x1000 for a long time ;)

What Intel 755 CPU was that, the SL7EM? I'm watching several of those on eBay right now. I'm also watching some 765 Dothan 2.1GHz 400 FSB CPUs. They're all the SL7V3 part. I doubt that the 765 is MUCH better then the 755, but I'd be interested in knowing if it will work in my X1050.
I still use my old X1050 almost every day at home, but now use the much lighter (4.1 lb) M4000 on the road. I have 5 desktops too, but the laptops get most of the use.
Also, I really appreciate this forum being kept up.
