Technical Issues / Problem with X1000, poss Video...
Last post by lmstr - August 24, 2008, 12:40:40 PM
Hi All,

I think I have a similar problem with my X1000.  Its been working so great over the years, figures that I comment on it going strong in the forums and then it breaks!

Well when I turn it on all I get is a black screen, the LED lights for the HD/Power/Charging do come on.

I took it apart to ensure connections were good...
It came on later and it worked...but then the video started going a bit crazy and it stopped...

I figure its one of three things:

Video Card .. overheating maybe?
LCD Inverter (God I hope so cause they are cheap)
LCD panel (ohh no I have a 1920-1200 LCD too!)

Please let me know if you guys have some ideas on what the issue is!  I may buy a new/used video card.  The other option is buy an x1000 carcass that are on sale and see if I can get one working computer out of the parts.  The last option is take the video card off and try to see if I can jury rigg the card to stop over heating.

Comments and ideas would be greatly appreciated!

-Elliott

That definitely could be the problem.  My guess is that it has to do with the Master or Slave setting of the drive (given that the drive is IDE, I do believe there is still a master/slave setting), but bigger problem is how to change it since most drives don't have jumpers, might need to flash the firmware of the dvd-rw drive to make it work.  But, like I said, this is just speculation on my part.

I was able to do this as well. I'm now using Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG.. I was able to bypass the whitelist by flashing modified bios and by disabling the CRC check from the windows hp flash utiliy. :p

I changed my dvdrom drive and replaced it with a dvd-rw drive that I got from an old toshiba laptop. The problem is that it wont boot from the dvd drive.. bios wont recognize it. But when I put back the old one, I can boot from the dvdrom drive. I noticed that if Im using the old one, it uses location 0 (from device manager) but if I use the new one, it uses location 1. Could that be the problem?

Technical Issues / how to check for processor or ...
Last post by existonz09 - August 15, 2008, 08:50:13 PM
i have had my x1000 compaq for about 4 years and have upgraded my hdd(60 -> 80 -> 100gb) and ram ( 512 mb ->  512 + 1gb) since then..  i had no problems playing old games in max settings but recently i am getting lagg spikes after about 10-15mins in game.. there is a possibiity of heating problem wid either the cpu(1.6ghz centrino) or the graphic card (radeon 9200 64mb dedicated)  but i am not sure which one is givin the problem since i need both is dependent on each other for performance.
i even tried using programs such as Notbook Hardware Control to decrease and increase the CPU clock 500MHZ - 1600MHZ and also
the graphic card's core and memory clock up and down but i get errors and no response sometimes..  how do i check if one of those components has degraded ?  i have also reinstalled my win xp pro SP2 two times (deleted old partition and added new one as well) and i still get the same error...  event viewer shows up nothing as well.. virus is totally out of the question as i have the latest nod 32 updates.. also tried online scanners as well.. so it has to be a hardware problem.... also tried DXDIAG video tests all came positive...  any suggestions ?

Technical Issues / Re: LCD Backlight Problem
Last post by kf_man - August 13, 2008, 01:39:27 PM
My best guess is that the backlight itself is dying, it probably needs a bulb replacement.  That said, I've never replaced the bulb so I'm not sure where to acquire one.  Other possible culprits would be the inverter or a loose connection.

Technical Issues / LCD Backlight Problem
Last post by gutchak - August 08, 2008, 09:14:41 AM
Good day...

I hope someone out there gets to read this.

My problem with my x1000 is the backlight lcd. It just turns off by itself. Tapping on the rubber switch turns it back on again. Sometimes the backlight stays on through and through my usage, sometimes it stays on for only a few seconds. Its getting more and more frequent, and i'd like to know if anyone knows how to fix this problem before it gets any worse.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

For Sale/Trade by Owner / Max Config'd Compaq Presario X...

Compaq Presario X1000 DK454AV (High end customized)
15.4 1920 x 1200 WUXGA RARE (The highest res you can get)
Intel Centrino M 1.7 Ghz
1 GB RAM
Toshiba MK6022GAX 60 GB 5400 RPM HD
Mobility Radeon 9200
DVD-RW / DVD-ROM
Front SD Card Slot
Intel Pro wireless Lan 802.11b / Bluetooth
Linksys 802.11g Wireless Adapter with Speed Booster
3 USB Connectors, Firewire

Working Keyboard, Working DVD ROM, Working Wifi (I Download at over 2 MB/Sec),
No Burnt Pixels, Working Trackpad.

One of the screen gummies (lid protectors) at the top fell off, and there's a slight
palm imprint on the left but that's about it.  The computer was serviced prior to the end of the 3
year service plan, with a new keyboard, HD and DVD installed (but still stock).

This baby has been working great since I bought it years back while in School.
When I purchased it, it was fully customized to the max .. retail was about $3,000.
I recently bought a new Apple MacBook Pro for work, so I'm using that full
time now.  I treated this laptop great and need to give this a good home.

I have no clue and don't have the time to upgrade this... though I imagine you can equip it with a 2.0
ghz cpu or more, 2 GB ram, and 7200 RPM, 802.11n card.

If you're interested, message me to make me an offer and we can talk about it.

From the impression I get from most websites discussing BR playback it requires a powerful processor and a powerful video card.  Though I think a Dothan 2.0 would be powerful enough I do*not* think a Raedon 9200 will be powerful enough...looks like I'm going to hold off...its too bad...That screen is still looking good too!
