If you have 1680x1050 resolution (or maybe any widescreen?), you're probably out of luck.. the more recent fglrx drivers don't work with mine.  An old version of the drivers worked for me very well, but requires an older version of the kernel as well.. so it's no longer usable.. ):

My laptop is an x1020us with ati 9200/9000 and 1680x1050 res.  If your video card is newer, it may work, so it's worth a try.

To install (very briefly):

Ubuntu 6.06:
1. Install xorg-driver-fglrx, fglrx-kernel-source, and fglrx-control packages
2. run "sudo aticonfig --initial"
3. run "sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv"

more info: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Dapper_Installation_Guide

Gentoo (this is from memory):
1. "emerge ati-drivers ati-drivers-extra"
2. use fglrxconfig to update your xorg.conf
3. run "eselect opengl ati" to enable hardware acceleration

If you don't intend on playing games (who does on linux?), then I find the open source drivers work very well and provide good hardware acceleration.

As I understand from a friend you can fiddle with the timing for the LCD and get it working. Same issues we have in windows, it's the LCD not detection getting hosed. I used to dual boot just to say stuff it to ole Bill, but damnit XP does everything I need and 3d on the x1000 pretty much sucks. Well maybe not suck, but it's not great.

Yeah, I tried the timings to no avail myself...

For me, linux does everything I need.. XP only brings additional headaches like virus/spyware scanners, constant updates, windows 'genuine' advantage crap, and much more..

Considering that I don't play games on my laptop, there's no need for windows.. hehe

Hy!
Got it to work!

i looked at http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Dapper_Installation_Guide , and find out that i need to put my modelines manualy in xorg.conf.

The ones in the page didnt work with me, so i went to windows, instaled PowerStrip and i got the modelines for my screen.

hope it helps ;)

Sweet!  The ones there didn't work for me either... I didn't know there was a utility that can grab the modelines!!  Unfortunately  I don't have windows installed...  Care to share the modelines you got so I can try it out?  (;

hm.. wonder if that utility runs in wine.. doubt it...   Edit:  Nope

I tried to install ubuntu, debian and gentoo.....none of them did the x1000 LCD correctly without me a having to mess with it.  I never did get fglrx going/latest drivers installed.  Best I could do was 800x600, lol.

Mandriva seems to have it all taken care of for you and am running in the native resolution....basically that was one of the draws to me when I decided to wipe the notebook, refresh it with the lastest version of mandriva (had 2005LE on it, but I had managed to goof it up messing around with it).  I wanted to try something new (all of the above), but had terrible issues for some reason.  The mandriva install/setup was pretty much easy to do....In fact based onthe installs I've seen, it is probably one of the ones that just about anyone could get thru....ie ready for mass-market-prime-time.

This is what the PowerStrip gave me:

QuotePowerStrip timing parameters:
1680x1050=1680,32,88,72,1050,1,3,11,121500,272

Generic timing details for 1680x1050:
HFP=32 HSW=88 HBP=72 kHz=65 VFP=1 VSW=3 VBP=11 Hz=61

VESA detailed timing:
PClk=121.50 H.Active=1680 H.Blank=192 H.Offset=16 HSW=88 V.Active=1050 V.Blank=15 V.Offset=1 VSW=3

Linux modeline parameters:
"1680x1050" 121.500 1680 1712 1800 1872 1050 1051 1054 1065 +hsync +vsync

i just used the last line :

Quote"1680x1050" 121.500 1680 1712 1800 1872 1050 1051 1054 1065

and it worked

Good luck
(sorry for my bad english )

Hhm, that got me thinking. I wonder if we can do this to make the newer ATI XP drivers work. Linux to troublshoot XP, I like it. =)

I believe it is possible, but it restricts you to a single resolution (unless of course PowerStrip allows you to define multiple resolutions, I've haven't used it before).  If someone wants to give it a try, that would be good information for the users here.  On the other hand, I'm not sure that using the latest version is really that important anyway.  I personally am happy with version 5.6.

Just an update:  I got the fglrx drivers working in Ubuntu 6.06 perfectly with the following modelines in the "Monitor" section:

The key difference seems to be the 121.50 which was what I was missing all along!  yay.

HOWEVER, I've since switched back to the open source drivers for ati that comes with ubuntu out of the box as it feels snappier when playing bzFlag, and doing other opengl stuffs... *shrug*

Helo guys

I have follow all your guide but still got blank / black screen after boot ubuntu 6.10
had been a week battle with my X1000 (X1022) 1680x1050 Mobility Radeon 9000/9200

would you guys paste your working "xorg.conf"

regard,
Benny.

Use the radeon driver ( opensource one ).

The fglrx does not support the card anymore, and has problems with this laptop.
